FLYBASE WEBSITE ACCESS FEE FAQ:

1. I am an unfunded lab / small lab / retired FlyBase user — can I still use FlyBase without paying a fee ?

We encourage use of FlyBase by ALL in our community, and have no plans to obligate fees with a login portal, etc.. We are simply putting this website access fee in place for those who are able to help. Use your best judgment on what you feel is right. We thank you in advance for whatever you can do !

2. I have undergraduate students / part-time staff / occasional users in my lab. How many people do I pay for ?

3. Is this fee mandatory ?

4. I run a teaching lab — I don’t have funds to pay for this — what do I do ?

5. When will I receive my bill ? / Will I be billed yearly ?

You should receive your bill from Harvard within several weeks after submitting your form. As for future billings, we are still working out details in this newly-implemented system. Stay tuned…

6. Can I pay in a few months / when my grant is renewed / etc. ?

Most certainly ! We are pleased of your support whenever possible.

7. Can I pay more than the fee FlyBase requests ?

Most certainly ! We appreciate, and welcome all support. Please contact flybase-fees@morgan.harvard.edu for additional information.

8. Why does the UK pay the same as US ?

The U.S.’s NIH/NHGRI supports 90% of FlyBase, and the U.K.’s MRC supports 10% of FlyBase. In addition, the US represents 40% of FlyBase usage, and the U.K. 10%.

9. How do I pay by PO (purchase order) ?

10. How can I pay by credit card, electronic bank transfer, etc. ?

You will have the option of paying via PURCHASE ORDER (PO), CHECK, CREDIT CARD, or BANK-TRANSFER once you have received an invoice. Additional details found HERE

11. Why isn't there an institutional or departmental fee ?

We are exploring these and other options. The first year of fee collection is a pilot to help us improve the process for all.

12. Is it allowed to pay optional/discretionary usage fees from federal grants?

We have been told it is not allowable to pay optional/discretionary usage fees from a federal grant, however this is a "website access fee", that is stated as such on the invoices you will receive from Harvard, and that is allowable to pay on federal grants. If you have any issues processing payment, please contact us at email below.

13. I get an error message on the site when I try to do XXX, is this because I didn't pay?

No, any error messages you receive on the site are not related to the website access fee. Please report them to us so we can resolve the issue.
